Jackie Joyner-Kersee Adds 100-Meter Hurdles Title To Long Jump Win

The Meet1994 USATF Outdoor Championships, Knoxville, Tenn., June 18

The Significance: There a couple of things to keep in mind as you watch the final day of the 1994 U.S. Outdoor Championships. First, it was hot. Broadcasters Craig Masback and Craig Sager indicate during the broadcast that with temperatures in the 90s and high humidity that the termperature on the track was near 130. The other thing to know is that this session happened one day after Americans were riveted to their television sets to watch O.J. Simpson and the infamous white Ford Bronco he was driving in make a bizarre low-speed chase through Los Angeles. This was six days after the murders of Simpson's wife, Nicole, and Ron Goldman. On the track, spectators are treated to Hall of Famer Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the greatest multi-event female of all-time, winning the 100-meter hurdles after already claiming the long jump. She did not contest the heptathlon this year. In the 800-meter finals, Mark Everett and Joetta Clark both became five-time winners of the event. The women's 400 meters features an exciting finish, with Natasha Kaiser-Brown pulling out the win in the final two strides over a fading Maicel Malone. In the women's 1,500 meters, Gina Procaccio, now the women's coach at Villanova, leads the first 1,000 meters in the sweltering heat before giving way to Regina Jacobs and Suzy Hamilton, who went 1-2.
