Rudy Winkler, representing Tracksmith, repeated as men's hammer throw champion at the United States Olympic Team Trials, producing an American record in the second round with a performance of 271-4 (82.71m) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Winkler eclipsed the 1996 mark of 270-9 (82.52m) achieved by Lance Deal in Italy. Winkler also matched an all-time American mark with five throws of more than 80 meters in the same series, which Deal produced in Berlin in 1996. Winkler elevated to the No. 20 competitor in history and is joined on the American roster by Daniel Haugh (260-5/79.39m) and Alexander Young (256-11/78.32m), who also achieved personal-best efforts.
